Description
How do you feed a body without using the colon?
My full 32-minute presentation, recorded live at the 2026 Energy Science & Technology Conference. Download the MP4 video and keep your copy.
Because of a bowel blockage, my mom was given about two weeks at most by the top GI surgeon in the Inland Northwest. She was being sent home on hospice, so the complete nutrition she was getting in the hospital, “a white fluid that has all your like aminos and fats” given through an IV, was going away. I had to act quick, so I set out to put together liquid nutrition that would add nothing to the colon. As I say in the talk, “instead of 14 to 21 days she lived for 79 days.”
I organize this conference. In this talk I speak as a son, explaining what I did, why I did it, and the difficulties I ran into. It is not a tested protocol for anyone else.

“But a cup of regular chicken broth doesn’t have hardly any calories.”

What you will see in the full presentation
- The question that started it: how I framed the problem as providing nutrition while adding nothing to the colon.
- Why I call it a formula, not a system: “more of just kind of a source code formula,” created out of necessity because there was no readily available solution.
- The limits of clear liquids: why ordinary broth, with “basically no protein” and “basically no fat,” did not answer my questions about nutritional content.
- Absorbed before the colon: why what I added is taken up through the mouth, stomach and small intestine, and “nothing makes it to the colon.”
- Intake and output: why the colon still makes a little from bacteria and mucus, even when nothing from the diet is added.
- The nutritional tradeoffs: why I focus on complete protein and calorie density rather than counting all liquids as equal.
- Other liquid approaches: how this compares with commercial elemental formulas and why I preferred working with real food.
- Not feeling satiated: the limitation I name plainly when describing the day-to-day reality of a liquid diet.
- The ongoing adjustments: getting tired of broth, mixing things up for variety, and the choices that were a balancing act.
- What we did in that time: more photographs, stories and birthdays, the things we were able to get done.

I am careful on that point in the talk: “the colon will still make poop because there’s still bacteria and there’s still some mucus, but it’s just a little bit.” My aim was to add nothing to it from what she took in.
79 days
My mom lived 79 days. This is one family’s account, not a study, and the talk does not establish what caused it.
“I don’t necessarily know if I would call it a whole system.”
Aaron Murakami, ESTC 2026

I walk through the choices, the adjustments and the difficulty of keeping to strict limits.

“So, you know, it was a balancing act. It was very, very difficult.”
Aaron Murakami, ESTC 2026
Who this is for
You have sat with a family member when the standard options ran out and wanted to understand what else could be thought through. You want the reasoning behind a liquid approach from someone who lived it, not a summary. Or you simply want the full account rather than the five-minute preview. If the subject is personally relevant, take it as a record of one family’s experience, not individual guidance.
You do not need a technical background to follow the reasoning. The presentation runs 32 minutes because I move from the underlying question to the practical account and its personal context. The MP4 download is yours to keep, so you can come back to the explanations.
“And so those are the kind of things that you want to do in a limited amount of time. You know, more photographs, stories, you know, birthdays.”

After watching, you will understand how I framed the problem of feeding a body without using the colon, the decisions I made, and the limits of what one family’s account can establish.
