Pure Water From Your Kitchen Sink: No Distiller Needed

Pure Water From Your Kitchen Sink cover, ESTC 2026

My regular kitchen tap reads about 130 parts per million. The spigot settles between eight and nine parts per million. I show both readings on two meters in my new 48-minute ESTC presentation, Pure Water From Your Kitchen Sink. I distilled water for years before switching, because of the electricity, the slow output and the cleaning. As I say in the talk, “I’m not distilling any water and I’m not spending a single penny on electricity.”

I start by comparing filtered water with pure water. Ordinary filtering takes out some of the chlorine and chemicals but leaves the heavy minerals behind. That is why I also show the inside of a kettle I have used for many years.

Kitchen sink readings on two meters

My regular tap water is already filtered. On the TDS meter it reads about 130 parts per million. Then I let the spigot flush while the meter reading falls past 29 and 15 PPM. Those are intermediate readings. The final reading settles between eight and nine parts per million. On a conductivity meter, the tap reads 0.25 millisiemens per centimeter and the spigot comes down to 0.01. “Well, that’s the instant proof right in front of your eyes.”

What the 48-minute presentation covers

  • Filtered versus pure: why filtered water still has the heavy minerals in it.
  • The kettle: a tea kettle I have used for maybe 20 years. “And the inside looks brand new, right?”
  • What distilling costs: by my numbers, three kilowatt hours of electricity to distill one gallon, plus the cleaning.
  • The drinking-water slides: the background figures I discuss before demonstrating my own kitchen-sink measurements.
  • Upkeep: “If I can’t just set it forget it and walk away, I’m not interested.” I have not touched mine in about two and a half years.
  • Questions from the audience: and a plain warning that it is a do-it-yourself project with no support from me.
