Because of a bowel blockage, my mom was given about two weeks at most by the top GI surgeon in the Inland Northwest. She was being sent home on hospice, so the complete nutrition she was getting through an IV in the hospital was going away. I had to act quick, and ordinary broth contributed hardly any calories. In my 32-minute ESTC talk, The Poop-Free Diet, I explain the question I faced, “how do you feed a body without using the colon?”, and the reasoning behind my liquid approach. It is out now as a download.
The standard option is clear liquids, and broth is the main one. But “a cup of regular chicken broth doesn’t have hardly any calories. There’s basically no protein. There’s basically no fat in there.” What I put together is “more of just kind of a source code formula” than a whole system. I put it together out of necessity, not as a system for anyone else. In the presentation, I say “instead of 14 to 21 days she lived for 79 days.” That was our experience, not a conclusion about cause. This is not medical advice.

What I mean by “nothing makes it to the colon”
The idea comes down to one line from the talk: “mouth, stomach, small intestines, and nothing makes it to the colon.” I am careful about that in the talk, because “the colon will still make poop because there’s still bacteria and there’s still some mucus, but it’s just a little bit.” The aim was to add nothing to it from the diet.
What I explain in the presentation
- Why clear liquids fall short: what ordinary broth does and does not give you.
- Complete protein: why broth alone is not a complete protein and how I thought about that gap.
- Calorie density: “you’re not only getting the aminos, but you’re also getting calories.”
- Elemental formulas: how my approach compares with the commercial ones and why I preferred real food.
- The hard parts: “you’re not going to feel like satiated,” you get tired of broth, and some choices were “a balancing act.”
- What we did in that time: “more photographs, stories, you know, birthdays.” We were also able to finalize all the legal business for her estate.
